ITPAA to go on indefinite hiatus as of 06-16-2006

It started with a question: “Who represents you?”

It was posed to me by an aide to a powerful Democratic senator who had listened patiently to me as I told him about my trouble finding a job at a time when there weren’t many jobs to be had. I told him about the empty classified sections of newspapers for technical jobs, and the pittance of jobs advertised on the web. Meanwhile, industry groups like the ITAA issued press releases stating that half a million IT jobs were going unfilled in the United States.

So I founded the IT Professionals Association of America, and for the past three years our organization has worked tirelessly to represent you in the halls of Congress and statehouses around the country. However as founder of the organization I have decided to end the organization’s activities as of June 16, 2006 – on the third anniversary of its founding. The website will remain up for the next three years, but it will not be updated nor will memberships be accepted.

The ITPAA is done. But the question remains: “Who represents you?”

Over the past three years the ITPAA struggled to boost its membership. It has pursued every avenue at its disposal to reach long term financial security. However it never came close to achieving it.

Calls for volunteers were never heeded. Interns never called back. Funding drives were ignored. While kudos, prayers and “attaboys” poured in, memberships never did. Over time I learned an important fact:

Happy thoughts – prayers, compliments, whatever – will not change anything. Only hard work and money will. Unfortunately, the ITPAA never had enough of either from anyone besides me and a very select few: John Pardon, “Anti-Outsourcing”, “Frankie”, and our kind hosts at Digital Labs, LLC.

As a believer in a free economy, I slowly realized that there was no market for what I was selling. If people really were energized by their situation, they would have offered more than “happy thoughts” to fight the ITAA – with 60+ paid employees and hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. When a group of H-1b’s organized to lobby Congress on their behalf, they raised $200,000 in one month. In 36 months we have raised less than $3,000.

I have sunk over $10,000 of my own money plus thousands of hours of time into an enterprise that has failed in the marketplace of ideas. I did my best and learned much, but our mission needs more than happy thoughts to continue. So it is over.

“Who represents you?”

Outsourcing "Democrat outsourcing inquiry defeated

The House Science Committee defeated a Resolution of Inquiry, H Res 717, introduced by Democrats demanding that the Department of Commerce release a report on outsourcing, by a vote of 19-14. But a motion to report the resolution adversely failed on a tie vote of 17-17, so the Committee will need to hold another markup next week.

We are all concerned about jobs for hardworking Americans. It is difficult for me to understand how this committee can seriously talk about bolstering America s global competitive position if, in the next breath, we claim not to want the most sophisticated analysis done by the Federal Government on what is happening with American jobs in high-tech fields, Rep. Bart Gordon, D-TN, the committee s Ranking Member and sponsor of the resolution.

Republicans on the committee dismissed the inquiry as partisan political gamesmanship. [T]here s no policy at stake in the resolution before us today. It has nothing to do with taking action in response to outsourcing. It s only about scoring political points related to a report. The release of that report wouldn't create a single new job although its sponsors may hope the debate over it creates new jobs for some Democrat candidates, said Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert, R-NY.

Boehlert also claimed that the resolution was unnecessary because all of the information in the DoC report had already been provided to the National Academy of Public Administration for its more extensive investigation into outsourcing. But the Democrats said that they had interviewed the DoC analysts who worked on the report, who said that they had spoken with NAPA, but had not made their data available.

But often that policy prescription does not work, as this book excerpt explains. It is adapted from "The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences" by Louis Uchitelle, an economics writer for The New York Times. Knopf will publish the book on Tuesday.
