: " Thousands To Lose Jobs To Outsourcing
Only On 7
By David Louie
Feb. 8 - ABC7 News has learned the ax is about to fall on several thousand Oracle workers in California and Colorado. Those jobs are being outsourced to India.
The move has angered one Oracle manager so much he's given himself a pink slip in protest.
ABC7 MONEYScope reporter David Louie has heard from multiple sources that the layoffs will come as early as tomorrow (Thursday.) Around 2,000 employees will lose their jobs at the old PeopleSoft in Pleasanton, at Oracle in Redwood Shores and outside Denver.
It's the result of Oracle's recent acquisition of rival Siebel Systems.
The layoffs are upsetting to a manager who had to help decide who's getting pink slips. He spoke to us on condition we conceal his face and alter his voice.
John, Oracle manager: "I put my name on the list. When I was asked for a list, I put my name #1."
ABC7's David Louie: "Why did you do that?"
John, Oracle manager: "I don't believe in what they're doing."
John is putting his beliefs on the line. As a senior manager, he was told to lay off 27 percent of his team at Oracle. And he put his name first to get the ax.
He says the jobs will be going overseas, to India, to save money. He says outsourcing has to stop.
John, Oracle manager: "My children's future depends on how hard everybody here works, and when you displace all of the jobs over to India, there's nothing left for our kids to do. So what do you tell them? You go home at night. 'How was your day, daddy? It was good. I lost my job today. Why? Well, somebody in India has it now.' It's not a good message."
John used to work at PeopleSoft, the target of a hostile takeover by Oracle.
Five-thousand PeopleSoft workers were let go. Now there's a second wave of layoffs. John says it's because a generous severance package expired last month. They will get only several weeks' pay instead of several months. They will also lose medical coverage.
Oracle's CEO, Larry Ellison, originally said PeopleSoft employees had nothing to fear.
Here's what Ellison told ABC7's Martin Wyatt on Nov. 11, 2003:
"The employees of PeopleSoft that come over to Oracle will be working at a stronger company, a financially sounder company, and will have a better long-term career working for a strong company like Oracle."
John wonders if Ellison knows the pain he's inflicting by chopping heads.
"'Is this who you are?' That's what I'd asked him. 'Are you proud of yourself? Is money worth it? Can you sleep at night?'"
The chief executive at Sierra Atlantic, which does high-level outsourcing for Silicon Valley companies, says moving some jobs to India has saved money that creates new jobs locally.
Raju Reddy, Sierra Atlantic CEO: "The companies that are the most successful are the ones that find the right blend of getting the work done both here locally as well as in India."
Oracle declined to comment about the layoffs.
The timing of the layoffs could be somewhat beneficial to the 2,000 people seeking new jobs. Silicon Valley recently showed a tiny upturn in hiring after four years of job losses.
